Abstract
The Magellan mission to Venus, a combined effort of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Martin Marietta, and the Hughes Aircraft Company, was one of NASA’s most successful deep space missions. Launched in 1989, it was the first spacecraft to image the entire surface of Venus. Magellan also marked the rebirth of NASA’s planetary program after a hiatus of 12 years. The following article focuses on the work of the engineers at Martin Marietta as they built, tested, and launched this interplanetary spacecraft.
