Abstract
Gerald Soffen (7 February 1926–22 November 2000) was the Project Scientist of the NASA’s Viking Program. A scientist and educator, he served in a variety of roles for the space agency, primarily dealing with education, the life sciences, and especially, the search for life on Mars. In 1978, he discussed his experiences about the Viking program and the exploration of Mars as part of the Iowa State University Lecture Series. The following is an edited excerpt from that discussion.
