“Viking Community: The MIT Family” by Rachel Tillman
Published in Quest Volume: 33 #3 (2026)

Abstract

Sometimes school is more than a place to study, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has always been more. From its inception, and before the Space Race of the 1950s and 1960s, MIT was a place for curious, creative, and rigorous thinkers to conduct research, begin and continue careers, and in a certain case—the students and faculty that contributed to the Viking missions to Mars—become a family.
