Abstract
The concept of a space elevator, which has actually been around for some 120 years, is a concept to provide access to space that is entirely rocket-free. This article shows the influence that the well-known science fiction writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke has had on the space elevator. It provides an insight into Clarke’s thinking and work regarding space elevators and the lasting effect his name still has. Had he not been such an influence and inspiration, it is possible that the concept of space elevators would not be quite where it is today.
