“Rocket Mountain High: John Denver and NASA” by Dominic Phelan
Published in Quest Volume: 28 #1 (2021)

Abstract

John Denver, one of America’s top songwriters and performers of the late 1960s and 1970s, had a long-standing interest in space travel, and during the early years of the Space Shuttle program, he worked to fly onboard the shuttle at the time NASA was considering flying non-astronauts in space. This article traces Denver’s relationship with NASA starting in the 1970s through the Challenger disaster of 1986 and beyond to Denver’s death in an aircraft accident in 1997.
