Abstract
A dramatic series of meetings was held in 1971 between 13 frustrated scientists who had trained to be astronauts and Dr. Homer Newell, a high-ranking member of the NASA leadership. Ultimately these meetings led to how astronauts were assigned to flights and the very definition of what it meant to be an astronaut.
