Abstract

Former Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Marc Garneau passed away at the age of 76 on 4 June 2025. Andrew Godefroy, the premier historian of the Canadian space program, looks at Garneau’s career and his significant contribution to the Canada’s space legacy. The first Canadian to fly in space, Garneau’s career encompassed three flights from the early days of the Space Shuttle to the assembly of the International Space Station, followed by leadership positions in the Canadian Space Agency and the Government of Canada.
