“Here Comes the Robots: The Last 25 and the Next 25 Years of Robotic Space Exploration” by Janet Vertesi
Published in Quest Volume: 31 #1 (2024)

Abstract

The first quarter of the 21st century has seen robotic space exploration rise to the forefront of public consciousness. With the sunset of the Shuttle program and astronauts whisked away to distant Soyuz launches, a series of charismatic robots charmed their way into the public’s hearts and social media feeds. Of course, robotic craft have always played an essential role in exploring the solar system. But a few important changes characterized the 21st century that will carry forward into its second quarter, offering challenges to those who chronicle contemporary spaceflight. I outline three such elements here: the people and organizations behind the robots, studying mixed-autonomy, and the rise of software-powered systems. These changes lead to unique textures of robotic space exploration in the 21st century and promise to carry forward as we move into the Artemis era of space exploration.
