Abstract

Harold Rosen is known as the “father of the geostationary satellite.” After reading a March 1959 IRE journal article by John Pierce and Rudy Kompfner from Bell Labs, “Transoceanic Communications via Satellites,” that stated that geostationary satellites would be too heavy to be launched, Rosen believed that his experience in guided missile design could bring the weight down and make them feasible. His team, including Don Williams, Tom Hugspeth, and John Mendel, took the idea from a concept to a practical design; developing a spin-stabilized control system along with lightweight electronics that could make them practical. Hughes Aircraft Company agreed to internally fund the development; with the US government later funding the Syncom program. Syncom I (February 1963) was beset by a rocket failure but Syncom II (August 1963) was successfully launched and Syncom III (1964) was able to relay live TV signals from the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The first commercial communications satellite, Early Bird, followed in 1965. What follows is an internal review of Harold Rosen’s proposal by Samuel G. Lutz, the Chief Scientist at Hughes Research Laboratories. Although this document is incomplete in that it refers to images, supporting documentation, and appendices that are missing, the importance of this proposal review is important enough to share.
