Abstract

The establishment of a second-generation US Space Command (SPACECOM), in August 2019, as a joint combatant command with geographic responsibility for military operations in outer space, had historical roots extending back nearly four decades. A few older, active-duty military officers and civilian employees even remembered activation of the first SPACECOM in September 1985. The details about how Colorado Springs, Colorado, became the headquarters for both of those commands have faded remarkably, however, through the mists of time. It has become the historian’s duty to recall them.
